The plot of the novel couples the political fragmentation of the world with the dissolution of West’s family. In the Splinterlands, this process repeats itself over and over. As we know, these political communities splintered under the pressure of globalization from above and nationalism from below. In both of these states, communist modernization integrated different ethnic groups – many of whom had conceived of themselves as nations – into nation states that transformed, at least for a time, the many into the one. Reflecting on events of the late 20 th century, West sees the breakup of the Soviet Union the civil war that tore apart Yugoslavia as “…the first hints of the new spirit of nationalism that would dominate our future” (15-16). Contrary to Eric Hobsbawm’s post-cold war assessment (1990), nationalism remains a crucially important vector of historical development. Nation states were torn asunder, explains the Julian West of 2050, by forces from above and below. Splinterlands envisions what happens when this foundation is shaken to pieces. The nation state, in other words, serves as a foundation of globalization. The novel can be read as the elaboration of Ellen Meiskin Wood’s observation that “…in this globalized world where the nation state is supposed to be dying, the irony is that, because the new imperialism depends more than ever on a system of multiple states to maintain global order, it matters more than ever who governs them and how” (2003: 155). By contrast, Splinterlands focuses on the demise of the nation state as the lynchpin of the contemporary global order. Other speculative histories, such Warren Wagar’s A Short History of the Future (1989) or the science fiction genre of cyberpunk (Rosenthal, 1991) conceive of the future by means of extrapolating the trends of the present – more concentrated corporate power, more inequality, more environmental disruption, more virtual reality so that the future winds up being a harsher, seedier and more surreal version of the present. Splinterlands offers us an analytically plausible account of the systemic change. We still care, presumably, about the fate of our globalized world. “Now that everyone has become accustomed to the world as it is,” avers West (in the year 2050), “they are less interested in how it came to be” (14).īut Feffer’s readers are still connected to the world that globalization wrought. But by 2050, all of this would become a forgotten world. “Pundits,” he remarks, “had already proclaimed the advent of a flat world, a borderless world, a McWorld” (13). Looking back on the world from 2050, West comments that prior to the publication of Splinterlands, most observers held a progressive vision of history in which the world was becoming more integrated, economically, politically and culturally. What happens when forms of global integration disintegrate? What pathways might these processes of the disintegration follow? John Feffer’s novel, Splinterlands, chronicles this passage from integration and fragmentation through the perspective of its narrator, Julian West, an historian-or, as he refers to himself, a geo-paleontologist-who wrote the Splinterlands to great critical acclaim in 2020. They are also questions about the developmental possibilities that inhere within the present, even if these possibilities seem to be mostly entropic in character. These are questions about change rather than stability. What if states lack the willingness and capacity to manage interdependence? What if the challenges of interdependence rise while the capacity and/or willingness of states to manage it declines? But current events-among them Brexit and the election of Donald Trump-pose vexing questions. This makes them stakeholders in the international system and it lends the system stability (Ikenberry, 2014). The substrate of IR, I would say, is not anarchy but different forms of interdependence, which states must manage. I used to be able to talk with my students about liberal internationalism with a fair amount of assurance. The original Star Wars story went through a lot of changes as Lucas worked out its kinks, turning it from a hot mess into the story that became the final film (a process which continued throughout production, and arguably to this day), and those continuing changes makes it hard at times to know when what occurred. Yes, that is literally what it says! Moreover, it lists “ Stainless Steel Rat”, which is now our verified inspiration for the TIE Fighter! The drawing seems to depict (abstractly) the cockpit of a ‘ TBF Avenger’ torpedo bomber, indicating the positions of the people, with the circle on the right being the rear-facing gun turret and idea which might have become Episode V's Snow Speeder. RF-3 (WWII Torpedo Fighter) colon design. RF-2 (Stingray) never made it, but it is circular, so maybe it shows the saucer shape already on Lucas's mind? RF-1 (Dart) now you know what inspired the X-Wing (a name Colin Cantwell came up with) It is too much to unpack in this Falcon-centric piece without going off the rails, but since this is the first time I get to address it, here are a few notes: It's a list of ships for Cantwell to begin work on, which given that Cantwell was the first creative hire, makes this the earliest conceptual artwork for Star Wars, and therefore the holy grail for nerdy space fantasy historians. Yes, this is from the hand of George Lucas on his characteristic yellow legal pad. expire on 06/14/23 30 used details por Get Coupon 15% off Code Extra 15% off Sitewide Never forget to use 15% Off Coupon when you shop at. 20% Discount on Any Order Coupons never wait! I strongly reccomend opening Google Earth Pro and working through the notes below/experimenting with the controls one at a time. As with any 3D viewer you need to take time to get used to the controls. Google Earth is designed to be easy to use but you are looking at a 3-D model and what you see is a function of both the orientation of the model in virtual space and your distance from it. Also set the Navigation controls to be permanently on. The status bar at the bottom of the cscreen is especially useful. NB The Roads and Borders options are often valuable, turn them on and off as needed.įrom the View Menu: Hide the tab bar (its a waste of space) but show the toolbar, sidebar and status bar. Turn everything else off, to give a clean view. Also check that the unit of Measurement is Meters, Kilometers and that Elevation exageration is set to 1 (if you are working in a low relief area like southern England you may want to experiment with setting a higher value, e.g. For the most part the default options are what you want butĬhange " Show Lat/Long" to Decimal degrees - they are far more convenient than using minutes and seconds. There is a preferences setting box, accessed from the menus. It has functionality which is missing from the other versions and as a geologist you should use the full application. For information on using this system to develop resources see: Create a map or story in Google Earth Web This interface is also availabe via a web browser at earth.google. It works really well and is a great way to rapidly get a good 3D view, but you can't control it as precisely and the options for adding your own content are much more limited. Google Earth on mobile - this is a simplified version of Google Earth Pro, with a cleaner interface. It has many features that are missing in Google Maps including the ability to add your own content, and it allows much greater control of what you see - although it is a bit harder to use. Google Earth Pro - this is a separate desktop app and essentially is a special browser for google imagery. It has awesome search but you can't add your own content and the view is often cluttered. Google Maps - you are almost certainly used to this system, on both web browsers and phone apps. The same basic system is made available in three different ways. The google earth system integrates satellite imagery, maps of the world, street view imagery, a digital elevation model and 3D viewing system.
